A chairde, Dear Friends, We hope that you have had a great holiday and that you’re continuing to enjoy some sunshine and maybe even the Schueberfouer ☺ We’re kicking off the rentrée with an Irish Club outing on Friday 13th September to see the award-winning film ‘Kneecap’ at Cine Utopia followed by food at Porta Nova. You can get your ticket online or at the box office. If you’d like to join us, please email our events and membership secretary Fiona Mulhern (fiona.mulhern@gmail.com) by Wednesday 11th September. There is no charge except for your cinema ticket and what you eat. We are taking registrations so that we can sit together. Members and friends are welcome. The film is part of the British & Irish Film Festival (BIFFL) with the Luxembourg 2024 Autumn Edition taking place this month. Core festival dates are 16-21 September, but other films are being screened as part of the festival during the week before and after starting with ‘Damaged’ (SC, US) on Wednesday 11th September at Ciné Utopia. You’ll find all the information about BIFFL including the programme and ticketing on the festival website: https://festivalevents.lu/filmfestival/about. We also encourage you to watch ‘Blurred Lines’ at 8.15pm on Tuesday 17th September at Cinémathèque. It will include a Q&A with the director and actors, who are visiting from Ireland, and will be followed by a Food & Wine reception. In addition to winning “Best Independent Film’ at a Film Festival in Dublin earlier this month, it has strong Luxembourg connections, being the subject of last year’s “The Business of Film Production” seminar in conjunction with the Ireland-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, BIFFL and the Irish Club of Luxembourg. New World Theatre Club (NWTC) have asked us to forward to ICL members the audition call-out for a one-act theatre play they are staging in January 2025: Nora & Jim. Written by contemporary Irish playwright Nora Connolly, the play follows the turbulent lives of Irish authors James Joyce and Nora Barnacle; it is a play about ambitions, love, needs, and threats. The cast requires one female and one male actor each with an approximate acting age between 30 and 50, a strong understanding of Irish linguistic idiosyncrasies and complexity, and a sensitivity to the history and culture of Ireland. Prospective candidates need to be available for rehearsals from September 2024. Auditions will be held on Tuesday 10 September and Monday 16 September from 19h to 21h. Anyone who fits the bill and is interested in auditioning should email NWTC at committee@nwtc.lu stating their first and second choices of audition dates. NWTC will announce the audition venue nearer the time. We hope to see you on 13th September for the screening of Kneecap and afterwards at Porta Nova as well as on 17th September for Blurred Lines and the post-movie food & wine reception.
